The Voices Within: Getting to Know My Parts
There's a debate going on inside. One part says "go ahead, say yes," another whispers "don't you dare," and another simply wants to sleep. We call it "indecision," but maybe it's something else: several parts of us, each wanting our good in its own way.
Inner Parts Work offers a different question. Instead of "how do I get rid of this part?" ask: "what is it trying to do for me?" A critical part, for example, often protects us from rejection. A pleasing part protects from loneliness. A withdrawing part protects from being hurt. They began their work long ago, when we were small and looking for a way to survive.
What changes when we listen?
The premise is that a part that feels seen needs to shout less. We stop fighting ourselves, and can start choosing instead of only reacting.
A short exercise: a conversation with a part
- Choose a feeling or reaction that has been with you lately: anger, fear, criticism, procrastination.
- Close your eyes and ask where you feel it in the body. Place a hand there.
- Ask with curiosity, not judgment: "What is your role? What are you protecting me from?"
- Wait for an answer, even if it's a sensation, a color or a word.
- Ask: "What would you like me to know?" and then: "What do you need from me?"
- Say "thank you for looking after me," and take a breath.
If there's a part you'd like to get to know with support, you can book a personal session on Zoom or in person in the Algarve.
