Before You Look for Them: Who Am I When I'm in a Relationship

There's a question many people ask at night: "why does this keep happening to me?" The same kind of partner, the same distance, the same feeling that when we get close, something inside me closes.

When we look for a partner, it's easy to look outward: where to meet, what to say, how to look. Inner work offers another movement. To look inward, at what I bring with me into a relationship.

Everyone arrives with a history. Pictures of what a relationship "should" be, learned at home. Old fears. And different parts inside me: one that wants closeness, another that's afraid of being hurt, and another that protects and keeps distance. When I know them, I can sometimes choose differently than usual.

Family Constellation adds a wider view: to the family I grew up in, to quiet loyalties, to patterns passed down. Sometimes a pattern that seems "mine" turns out to be connected to a larger story.

It isn't a formula that brings a particular person into your life, and it isn't a promise. It's work on my relationship with myself, which is often the foundation of every other relationship.

A short exercise: a letter to the relationship I'm waiting for

Take a page and a pen, and write without thinking too much. Five minutes.

  1. "The relationship I want is one where I..." (feel, can, am allowed)
  2. "I'm afraid that if I get close..."
  3. "The part of me that's afraid wants you to know that..."
  4. "To receive love, I'm willing to start with..."

Read it aloud, and notice what moves you, what surprises you. You can bring it to a personal session, where we'll sit with these words together.
